The Westerwoldepad is, to me, one of the finest hiking routes in the north of the Netherlands. Together with my hike buddy Patrick, I walked this two-day variation in the weekend of March 21, and it really feels like a small adventure close to home.
About 90% of the route is unpaved, winding along the Ruiten Aa, through ancient forests and across heathland. That variety is what makes it so good: quiet, green, and surprisingly wild, with fortified Bourtange as the perfect overnight stop halfway through.
If you want to turn the Westerwoldepad into a real micro-adventure, this two-day version is easy to recommend. Below you’ll find the route map, so you can explore it or save it for later.
